November is all about Art in Burlington
Burlington is a year round hub of art activities but the month of November seems to be a busy one with many creative events to inspire you.
The month starts off on November 7 & 8 with the 13th annual Art in Action Studio Tour that showcases area artists and their fabulous works. I am looking forward to a day out with a friend, browsing and getting an early start on Christmas shopping with some unique one-of-a-kind gifts. For several years now I have spent a beautiful fall day visiting the studios, meeting artists, admiring their works and selecting some amazing pieces. This volunteer run event features 9 “studios” with 25 artists. With Photography, Jewellery, Fine Art, Hand Turned Wood, Quilting, Glass, and Sculpture it will be hard to pick which studios to visit so it is a good thing it is held over two days! I am really interested in the jewellery, stained glass and quilting and would love to take these courses to make my own creations. If you want to see a preview of what to expect at the studio tour the Art Gallery of Burlington has a exhibition and sale from October 21 – November 11 in the RBC Community Gallery. This studio tour showcases the very talented creative community we have here in Burlington.
Another can’t miss annual event is the Soup Bowl and Fine Art & Craft Sale now in its 19th year and held at the Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB) from November 19-22. This event is that perfect mix – culinary delights and retail therapy! Here is how the Soup Bowl works. You choose a fabulous handcrafted ceramic bowl from the hundreds of choices hand made by potters from across Ontario. Then you fill it with your choice of gourmet soups made by local restaurants. Add a crisp, fresh salad, roll and yummy ice cream for dessert. The best part is that you keep the bowl you chose, a volunteer wisks it away, and it is returned to you clean and packed for you to take home. Over the years I have gotten a number of beautiful bowls in many shapes, sizes and colours that I proudly display and use for dips, candies, and soup of course! The Soup Bowl is a very popular event so reserve your seat early to avoid disappointment. You can book tickets online or purchase in person at the gallery.
As an added bonus the Fine Art & Craft Christmas Sale presented by Arts Burlington is going on at the same time at the Gallery and it is a great opportunity for you to do some shopping for beautiful hand-made gifts. With numerous artisans participating, there is a lot to choose from for everyone on your gift list. I usually pick up some great hostess gifts, stocking stuffers and one-of-a-kind items. I also have bought some lovely items for myself to spruce up my holiday wardrobe. There is no fee to attend the sale and hours are from Thursday from 11 am – 9 pm, Friday 11 am – 4 pm and Saturday and Sunday 11 am – 4 pm. While at AGB be sure to also drop into the Art Etc. Gift shop one of my favorite haunts, to check out their beautiful holiday display of Canadian arts and crafts.
RBG Christmas Show & Sale
On the same weekend from November 19 – 21 the Royal Botanical Gardens is having their Auxiliary Christmas Show & Sale. The event runs from 10 am – 4 pm at the RBG Centre on Plains Rd. This event will provide you with great ideas for seasonal design and you can purchase fresh greens and special selections of amaryllis and paper white bulbs to brighten those cold winter days. They will also be featuring unique seasonal silk designs and beads and baubles to add sparkle for your home décor. I attended this event last year and the smell of the fresh greenery got me in the seasonal mood immediately and I came away with some new ideas for my outdoor planters. Thursday admission is free and the rest of the dates the regular admission prices are in effect. I always take the opportunity to visit the gift shop while at the RBG as there are great nature inspired items for all ages plus a fabulous selection of jewellery, scarves and giftware.
So join me in November at one or all of these fun events and watch for our tweets while I am out and about. For more information on events and getaways visit Tourism Burlington.com.
