Dr. Frank Hayden - Founder - Special Olympics
Dr. Frank Hayden is a sports scientist best known for being the catalyst behind the development of the Special Olympics. As a result of his work to change public perception about people with disabilities, Hayden was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000 and was inducted into the Order of Ontario in 2011. His idea for the Special Olympics has been implemented in over 140 countries worldwide. In 2013, a new secondary school in north Burlington was named the Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School to honour his accomplishments in the field of education. In 2014 Hayden was inducted into the Burlington Sports Hall of Fame. In 2016 Dr. Hayden was inducted into the Canada’s Sport Hall of Fame. In 2017, Hayden received an honorary degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
