5th Season Launches at Burlington Performing Arts Centre

It is hard to believe that The Burlington Performing Arts Centre just launched its 5th season of entertainment.  I remember the excitement and anticipation in 2011 when the dazzling new theatre opened and announced its line up for the inaugural season.  Sitting in the audience last week, you felt that same electricity in the air as Connie Smith, freelance broadcaster and Brian McCurdy the centre Executive Director, introduced the performances for next fall, winter and spring.

It was amazing to hear that over 80,000 people enjoyed the various productions last year.  For this upcoming year 68 artists/companies will be performing so we expect attendance will be even higher since this is the largest offering of arts and entertainment the theatre has presented to date!  This is great news for those of us in the tourism business as the city is a busier place when the theatre curtain is up.  The night of the season launch, we grabbed dinner before the show at one of the busy downtown restaurants and noticed that the streets were buzzing.

The 2015-16 season has a mix of returning favourites and new performers with plenty of variety to appeal to every taste.  The performances have been organized into 15 series to make it easier to find specific genres. The cool thing about these series is if you chose 4 or more you can take advantage of reduced pricing and you can mix and match and still save!

Last year a group of us attended two performances during the season and both just happened to be part of the comedy series.  We not only enjoyed the acts (Women Fully Clothed and Just for Laughs), we got together pre/post show at a local restaurant to catch up.  It was such a fun event that we are planning to do this regularly!  I am thinking we would have fun dancing at Saturday Night Fever musical (I know it shows our age) and maybe Howie Mandel or Matt Dusk (be still my beating heart! J)

The launch evening finished with an amazing performance by Canada’s queen of R&B/soul and Juno award winner Jully Black.  Jully gave the audience a tease of what they would see in October when she shares the stage with Jarvis Church (lead singer of Philosopher Kings).  What a perfect way to end the evening listening to such stellar vocals.

Tickets for this new season go on sale starting June 3 (see details at end of blog) and if previous years are any indication several of the performances sell out quickly.  The programme can be downloaded from the website which is well laid out making it easy to search the information by month or by series.  To keep current on what is happening at the centre I suggest that you sign up for their Enewsletter so you don’t miss out on seeing fabulous entertainment.  Remember to check the website regularly as there may be new performances listed throughout the year.
