This Weekend in Burlington – August 11-13
Stop saying summer is almost over. This is still peek vacation time. There are plenty of opportunities for new experiences and summer adventures. This weekend you have a chance to celebrate Canada 150 with your bike and dine at more than forty restaurants in one afternoon. Here are your weekend events for August 12 and 13.
Concerts in the Park – Sundays and Wednesdays to August 13
The finale of this summer’s Concerts in the Park season is a classical and contemporary performance from The Burlington Concert Band on August 13 at 7:30pm at the Central Park Bandshell. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. Check the event website for the up-to-date lineup.
Nature Connects® art with LEGO® Bricks – Daily to August 20
Take a stroll through the Royal Botanical Gardens’ Hendrie Park and explore the 14 works of art created with Lego by New York artist, Sean Kenney. Kids will have a great time at the Build Centre creating their own masterpieces. Be sure to pick up an activity book and check the daily schedule for guided tours. On August 13, showcase your own original Lego art at the Nature Connects Pop-Up Museum.
Farmers’ Markets – Friday-Sunday to October
Load up on farm fresh items and shop local producers at one of our two farmers’ markets. Friday (8am to 4pm) and Saturday (8am to 2pm) visit the Burlington Mall Lions Farmers’ Market. On Sunday (9am to 12pm) head to downtown Burlington for the Centro Garden Farm Market.
Open Studio Workshop – Sundays
Fit In The Core – Sundays to August 20
Burlington’s Fit In The Core sessions continue on August 13 from 10am to 11am with a Vinyasa Flow class presented by Kinetic Yoga & Pilates. After exploring movement and breath, grab a sample distributed by Bodhi Bar. Every Sunday there is a different open air fitness class outside City Hall. Bring your mat and water bottle.
Family Outdoor Movie Nights – Fridays to September 1
From 8pm to 10:30pm, on August 11 bring the kids to Kelso Conservation area to watch the family movie “Trolls” under the stars. Come for the evening or book a campsite to spend the night. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. Popcorn, snacks, and drinks will be available for purchase.Check the Conservation Halton website for regular hours and admission fees.
From 9am to 1pm join The Great Waterfront Trail Adventure cyclists at the Spencer Smith Park Compass for water, healthy snacks, and giveaways. Learn about bike safety and get your bike fixed before departing on a group bike ride to the lift bridge and back. Use this as an opportunity to celebrate Canada 150 and Burlington as a bike-friendly community.
Burlington Downtown Jazz Fest – August 11 to13
Head over to the Burlington Performing Arts Centre for free outdoor jazz performances on their plaza. Grab a beverage and listen to the musical stylings of Amanda Martinez, Laila Biali, Kellylee Evans, and Jane Bunnet. Check their website for artist bios and show times.
Burl On Tap – August 11 to 12
Come out to this boozy 19+ event at Burlington’s Waterfront Hotel to sample several local and distant craft breweries. BurlOnTap is a two day event running on August 11 from 4pm to 11pm and August 12 from 12pm to 11pm. Amazing Things to Do Before You’re 12 – August 12 & 13
Turn back the clock and make some time childhood memories at Mountsberg and Crawford Lake Conservation Areas. Families can spend the day checking things off a list of “Amazing Things To Do Before You Are 12”. Make a nest like a bird, touch a snake, make a masterpiece, learn to make fire with out a match, and play to your heart’s content. You won’t want to miss the fun at this year’s mud pie kitchen at Mountsberg or at the Archery range at Crawford Lake. Live snake and raptor presentations round out a day full of family fun.
St. Elizabeth’s Canada 150 Celebration – August 12
Join St. Elizabeth’s Anglican Church, Love My Hood, and Councillor Paul Sharman in celebration of Canada 150 at Burlington’s Skyway Park for a BBQ and family fun from 10am to 4pm. There will be lacrosse, hockey, historical exhibits, and children’s crafts. Visit their website to learn more.
Pajama Night Kids Survival Night – August 12
Wear your comfy pajamas to Crawford Lake from 7pm to 9pm for an evening of learning basic survival skills. Practice archery, shelter-building, and fire-starting as part of the Halton Parks 150 Trails Challenge. Remember to register and pay online in advance.
Lakeside A La Carte – August 13
Calling all foodies! From 1pm to 4pm, Spencer Smith Park will be transforming into a gourmet dining venue and hosting over forty restaurants, wineries, and breweries to showcase Burlington’s culinary scene. While you dine, enjoy a silent auction, live musical entertainment, and raffles. Proceeds support the Burlington Rotary club, Joseph Brant Hospital, the Reach Out Center for Kids, and Our Community Cares. Check online for the full restaurant lineup and to purchase tickets.
