Girls’ Getaway 2018
Being the only female in the house I must say I always look forward to a little getaway with my friends to catch up, rejuvenate and enjoy some girl-time. There are many appealing girls’ getaway activities here in the Burlington area whether you are a visitor or a local, looking for a staycation. If you are looking for inspiration, here is an itinerary that we’d be happy to share with our girlfriends! Pamper Me Getaway
Day 1 – RELAX and INDULGE
Going to a spa is an indulgence that many of us don’t treat ourselves to often and is a perfect outing for a girls getaway whether for a special occasion (wedding, post-baby, birthday) or just because. Being pampered -having a relaxing massage, enjoying a glass of wine or specialty tea, and chatting with your BFF is one of those small luxuries that help reduce stress and rejuvenates you. In Burlington we have some wonderful day spas that you can enjoy including Sanctuary Day Spa (Leading Spas of Canada) and Spa in the Village. If you want to tempt all your senses JeSpa has chocolate treatments. For a full list of spas visit our website.
Follow up your spa visit with lunch at one of the many eateries located in downtown Burlington. With so many amazing restaurants and a taste to please every palate it will be hard to choose but might we suggest some of our favourite locations. For something exotic consider Rayhoon Persian Eatery or Paradiso (specializing in Mediterranean); for an intimate lunch head to Martini House, or Downtown Bistro. If you want spectacular waterfront views then, Spencer’s at the Waterfront (Local Food) or Emmas Back Porch (International) are for you. Last but not least for an elevated pub experience consider Beaver & Bulldog or Queen’s Head Pub. For a full list of restaurants in the area by cuisine, visit our website.
Afternoon – Sweet Things
Hopefully you have saved a little room after lunch for some sweet things as Burlington has so many delicious treats to chose from. I can say that I have tried most of the sweet indulgences (the sacrifices I make for the job!) and they are absolutely to die for! Highlights include delicious gluten free cupcakes, cookies and squares from Kelly’s Bake shoppe, hand made truffles and chocolates at Casteleyn Chocolatiers by Belgian trained chocolatier Mark Casteleyn, award-winning handcrafted melt-aways (my fav), cookies, and chocolate creations at Walker’s Chocolates and delectable all natural, made one batch at a time biscotti from our friend Angelo at Mrs. B’s Gifthouse. At Tourism we give these items as gifts to visiting dignataries, so you know they must be fabulous. Check out our website for all the sweet locations.
Check into Burlington Hotel Association (BHA) member hotels or a local B&B and relax before dinner.
Evening – DINING and ENTERTAINMENT
After a full day of spa treatments and sweet delights you might want to opt for small plate dining at Barra Fion, where sharing is encouraged and some girl talk over a glass of wine is a great way to end the day.
However, if all those sweets left you with energy to burn and you are looking for something fun to do once the sun goes down, the entertainment scene has live music, dancing and comedy. Downtown Burlington is hopping with lots of historic pubs and night spots to enjoy a drink, dance or catch a band. Also be sure to check out what is happening at the new Burlington Performing Arts Centre which hosts international and local performances. I have attended several concerts at this lovely theatre located right next to our visitor information centre and trust me there is not a bad seat in the house and the sound is amazing! If you head further uptown, you can share some laughs at Club 54 and stay for the dance party or hit one of the nightclubs where it is always party time! In particular Ivy Bar and Kitchen is a popular night spot for the 25 plus crowd with a great dinner menu, a huge outdoor patio and large dance floor. I tried the lunch menu at Ivy during the Taste of Burlington program and enjoyed their Caesar salad, spicy dry rub chicken club and powdered donuts with blueberry ginger dipping sauce. I had to take a doggie bag so I enjoyed it the next day too!
Day 2 – ART & RETAIL THERAPY
Morning – Destination Downtown
Most of hotels offer a delicious breakfast with your overnight stay. If not you can enjoy a lovely breakfast at places like Cora’s, Sunset Grill or Russell Williams a family style restaurant which serves breakfast all day (love their pancakes!). Spend your second day indulging in some retail therapy with lunch along the way depending on how much of a break you want from shopping. We suggest you visit the downtown shops in the morning and then head to west Burlington known as Aldershot for lunch and a visit to the RBG.
One of my personal favorites, shopping! No matter what the season, a perfect day for me is meeting a friend downtown where we browse the fabulous fashion and home furnishing stores. We make sure to take break to enjoy a leisurely coffee or gelato at one of the quaint cafes. For a city of its’ size Burlington is very fortunate to have a thriving local arts scene with various galleries featuring talented area and Canadian artists, plus some cool public art installations. We often purchase gifts from the shops at Art Gallery of Burlington Art Etc. Gallery Shop as they are often one of a kind, and a great momento from Burlington. (NOTE: Limited downtown shopping is available on Sundays.)
Afternoon – Let the shopping continue
By now you are probably starving so we suggest stopping in Aldershot for lunch at West Plains Bistro and then continuing on to the RBG to visit the gardens and wonderful gift shop. If you want to make it a marathon here are some other options. With two shopping centres, Mapleview Centre for the fashionista and Burlington Mall plus numerous other popular and unique retail destinations you can spend all weekend and not see the same old, same old. Below is a short list of some of the shops in the city – check out our website for more!
- Fashion – Joelles, The Oyster, and Mirella’s etc.(downtown), Marshalls, LuLu Lemon, Coach, etc. Mapleview Centre;
- Shoes – (yes it has to have it’s own category) – Pearl St. Fine Shoes and Foot Tools, (downtown) Shoe Company;
